Draped Bridesmaid Series so far…
0 CommentsTuesday • December 20, 2011 • by Cassie
As promised, here are 3 of the draped bridesmaid fitting samples for a little side by side comparison. I am going to do one more to tie in with these three. The first dress is the completion of the strapless shell I posted yesterday with a little added skirt flare and a pleated strap addition.

There is definitely a dress 1 = fun, dress 2 = elegant, dress 3 = sophisticated, thing going on with these styles so I suppose my first step for the fourth dress is to come up with the last word! hehe Anyway, I will update the progress shortly. Have a good day-o!

Merry Christmas Week! Lot’s to do this week but today I am working hard on the 3rd bridesmaid dress in the draped series. I wanted to do an amalgamation of the first 2 dresses to tie them together in a fun way. This is what I have so far:

I took a lot of the bodice pleating from the first dress and the skirt detail from the second dress to make a fun style. There are a couple of pleats I would like to do away with and I would like to add a detail to the top like a sweetheart neck or a one shoulder piece but I am going to fit this sample first. I will post some final pictures of the fit samples side by side tomorrow!

The second dress in the draped bridesmaid series is a little bit of a looser Grecian style, not so structured. I really liked this skirt idea when I started:

But when I took the pattern and recut it came out a little stiff for me:

I wanted a bit more movement through the skirt and the top to have more volume and look more drape-ish, less pleat-ish, on the body. So I added some volume and a few extra pleats and tacks for this effect:

Close up of the skirt detail, which will actually sit at the side of the body but is pulled a bit to the back in this sample:

I like this fit for this style a lot. The actual fabric is a beautiful silk with lot’s of drape so for this style the waist seam needs to fit just right but everything else can kind of flow and take shape with wearer.
Just a reminder that the Local-E pop up shop is only open until Sunday so get on it this week! I still have a few things over there, including this cutie:

Have a good day!

Good Monday Morning!
I am doing a series of draped bridesmaid dresses and since I have not done a social follow along in awhile, I thought I would document the progress for these dresses. All the dresses are going to have slight variations but keep with the same uneven pleating theme. To start, the front bodice:

Then adding a little overlay on one side and a fairly large shoulder wrap piece:

Back Drape complete and in the process of the shoulder wrap piece:

The red marks are indicators needed for taking the fabric off the dressform and developing the pattern, like here:

Not too glamorous! Transfer to paper:

Still not very pretty to look at! But now I can have a try cutting it out of scrap fabric (the dresses won’t be shiny white!):

Not bad. The pleats are still unpressed and untacked at this point but it fairly obvious that the pleats need to be a bit deeper. Now to adjust the pattern and try again!

Hello, happy sunny Monday!
I am super dee duper busy so I am just going to post a few pics to show the progress on the bridesmaid dress. I applied the lining to to the bodice so that the lace hangs off the edges. The skirt has also been attached. Now I am going to attached the tulle to the lining layer and tack down that chiffon piece that comes from the knot at the front.

More to come! Have a good day!

Hello, hope you all had an awesome long weekend!
I have made a lot of progress with the black lace and chiffon bridesmaid dress, it will be complete soon!
Firstly, the back drape:

Then I finally started the skirt! There are a lot of layers to this thing; I started by attaching the panels:

It is very gathered, the total length is longer than my table!

To give the skirt even more depth, I reversed the panels and put another layer underneth:

Still a layer of tulle to come. And of course lining the whole thing… so I guess still a bit more work, but I think it is going to turn out beautiful. Have a good day!

Hello, Happy Monday,
Busy busy over here, I am working on the bridesmaid dress little by little.
I started draping and tacking the first layer of chiffon onto the lace bodice. Firstly, I prepped some chiffon by finishing the edges and basting the ends for gathering:

Then I attached the chiffon length onto 1 of the linings on the shoulder pieces. The actual shoulder pieces are being worked on separately by the client and will be attached at the end.

Now for the tricky part! The draping is a rift Mila Kunis’ Elie Saab Couture Oscar gown. First, lay then drape out. Then, measure the length and attached to the other shoulder piece:

With 3 sides attached:

Remove and tack edges. Once the bodice has been lined, I will move the chiffon gathering around a bit and do a few more tacks to make sure everything is in the right place:

Here is the shot of the front drape so far. There is going to be one more drape coming from the knot into the waistline and then into the skirt:

I will update with the back drape soon! Have a good day!

Hello jello,
Lot’s of fun projects on the go over here and I thought I would share this one for your follow along enjoyment. The finished product will be a surprise! I can say it is a bridesmaid dress, a very dramatic, very textured and draped bridesmaid dress with lot’s of fabric layers and a very fitted bodice. It is also black!
To start I fitted the muslin and made pattern correction. Then I began the bodice:

Second, I clipped and pressed the bodice and put it on the dressform. I started draping the lace:

To create the darts and make the lace look seamless you have to cut around the pattern and handsew the lace in place. In the end it is very difficult to see any seaming in the lace:

One side finished:

Repeat on the other side and around the back (which is a bit easier because you don’t need so much shaping):

Now I will trim the excess lace and work on the draped chiffon layer. Still to come: tulle! lace and chiffon pieced skirt! shoulder pieces! Have a good day friends!
DIY: Fun fix for old shoes!

Good Morning summer girls and boys, I hope you are all enjoying the long weekend!
I did a little project on an old pair of ugly shoes that turned out ok, so I thought I would post. I usually kind of hate diy’s. I once saw one in InStyle magazine that told people to SUPERGLUE cheap gold chain around the edges of a cardigan to add a CHANEL touch to old sweater. I almost had a heart attack, that would look sooooo f-ing bad, never do that, thinking about that advise makes me laugh. Anyway, my diy is not that simple but for a casual fix and something fun, it is actually viable.
Shoes to start with:

These are pretty ugly to begin with. I am not sure when I bought them but probably the time I decided to dress up as a piece of straw, or the time I was a homeless rover taking camouflage in a wheat field. I do like the low wedge heel and the fabric is linen so it is easy enough to dye. If you want to try to dye a pair of shoes, the easiest fabrics would be cotton, linen, silk. You could dye leather shoes in a different way fairly easily but if the shoes you like have different fabrics mixed together, that would be tough to predict the results.

Dye in a small plastic garbage can. Do it outside and wear a little face mask. The shoes should sit in there for 40-60 minutes.

All done. Rinse, rinse, rinse and let the shoes dry upside down if possible. Drying time: overnight.

When the shoes were halfway dry I started to paint little daisy’s on them. Some of the daisy’s were better than others, especially toward the end! You could definitely do something more complicated and get really cool results. Time for painting: 30 minutes. Then let it all dry for another 3 or so hours.

Then I added a white ribbon in the folds of the shoe design. Time: 10 minutes.

The shoes are almost done drying and I think they turned out pretty cute!

All done drying and the color has evened out a bit better. The most timely aspect of this project is the drying. Other than that, pretty easy! If you have nothing to do on your day off, go dig up some old shoes and try a revamp!
